The second annual Snedeker Memorial lived up to the hype and then some! This year’s champion, Nate Smith, proved unstoppable, cruising to a 6-shot victory over Bobby Wyatt and Sam Jackson. Smith, who has been making waves in the mid-amateur scene, has recently reemerged with a T-3 finish at the Stocker Cup last fall, along with a solid showing at the U.S. Mid-Am match play last summer. With this impressive win at the Snedeker Memorial, Smith is set to climb the rankings and snag more prestigious invites!
In addition to the individual competition, the event also featured a team format running in tandem, and it was no surprise that Nate Smith and his partner Kris Marshall dominated, taking home the win in the team play category. It’s clear these two Swampdogs are a force to be reckoned with!
The event itself was nothing short of spectacular. The golf course and accommodations are conveniently located within the same property, making it a seamless and enjoyable experience for all players. The event committee went above and beyond, offering plenty of social activities and cocktail hours that kept everyone mingling and having fun. If you didn’t catch the action, be sure to check out the tournament’s Instagram account—there are tons of highlights from the week that will have you wishing you were there!
The Snedeker Memorial is a heartfelt tribute to the parents of Brandt and Haymes Snedeker, Larry and Candice. Hosted at the historic Lakewood Club, a Perry Maxwell-designed gem built in 1947, the course has previously hosted three USGA events, making it the perfect venue to challenge the country’s top mid-ams.
It was truly a world-class event that combined competitive spirit with a sense of camaraderie and tradition.

Since its inception in 1957, Champions Golf Club has been a cornerstone of amateur golf in Houston, thanks to the vision of Jack Burke and the late Jimmy Demaret. The duo was committed to fostering an active and competitive amateur golf community, and just four years later, they introduced the prestigious Champions Cup Invitational. This event, a four-round, two-man best ball stroke competition, quickly became one of the nation’s premier amateur tournaments.
The Champions Cup invites only the best, with strict eligibility requirements: both team members must be over 25 years of age, members of accredited USGA golf clubs, and hold a handicap of 3 or lower. With these criteria, the event continues to attract some of the country's top amateur golfers each year, making for a highly competitive and thrilling experience.
Over the years, Champions has hosted numerous significant national events, solidifying its reputation as one of the finest golf clubs in the U.S. These include the 1967 Ryder Cup, 1969 U.S. Open, and the 2020 U.S. Women's Open, among others.
As we look ahead to the 2025 Champions Cup, it promises to be another exciting chapter in this historic tournament, showcasing the best in amateur golf in a setting that’s rich with tradition. Get ready for a fierce competition and a celebration of the game at one of the most iconic golf clubs in the country!
