What we are steaming on this month:

We're back in your inbox and ready to roll with another edition of the newsletter! While April didn’t quite bring a flurry of events, it did serve up one two seriously impressive headliners: the Champions Cup Invitational and Evan Beck competing at The Masters. And let’s be honest — if you're going to have a quieter month, you might as well let a performance like the one from Will Davenport and Nick Maccario do the talking. The duo put on an absolute clinic at Champions Golf Club, reminding everyone why they're a force in the mid-am scene. More details on all the happenings in Houston below.

But now, buckle up, because May is where the season kicks into gear. The calendar is absolutely stacked — we’ve got four marquee mid-am events on tap: the inaugural Giles Invitational at Kinloch, the Travis Invitational at Garden City, the always-competitive Lupton at The Honors, and the tough test that is the Huddleston Cup at Maridoe.

That’s not even mentioning the USGA Four-Ball, where Blanchard and Engel will defend their title on behalf of the mid-ams. From here on out, it’s full throttle for mid-ams everywhere. Whether you’re teeing it up or just following the action, May is where the season starts cooking — and we’ll be here every step of the way. Good luck to all the mids at the USGA Four-Ball!

Two familiar faces to the midamgolfHQ page took home the title down Houston way. Will Davenport and Nick Maccario delivered a commanding performance at the 57th Champions Cup Invitational Four-Ball, held at the historic Champions Golf Club. The duo posted rounds of 67, 64, 64, and 69 to finish at 20-under par, securing an eight-shot victory over the field . Davenport and Maccario showcased remarkable consistency and synergy throughout the tournament. Davenport will look to take home another four-ball title this spring at the USGA Four-Ball. If he should achieve such a feat, he may etch his name in the four-ball hall of fame!

The Champions Cup Invitational, established in 1961 by golf legends Jack Burke Jr. and Jimmy Demaret, is a prestigious 72-hole best-ball stroke play event that attracts top amateur talent from across the country. The Cypress Creek Course, designed by Ralph Plummer and opened in 1959, has a storied history, having hosted major events such as the 1967 Ryder Cup and the 1969 U.S. Open . Rounding out the top of this year's leaderboard was Phil Arci & Simon McInnis and Liam Logan & Blake Vinson in a tie for second place at 12-under, while Kade Stewart & Josh Gibbons and Kristoffer Marshall & Jake Byrum rounded out the top five at 11-under.

The Giles Invitational

May 2-4, 2025

Kinloch Golf Club

The Giles Invitational kicks off its first year at Kinloch Golf Club, a fitting venue to honor its namesake, Vinny Giles—a titan of amateur golf. A Virginia native and University of Georgia standout, Giles captured both the U.S. Amateur (1972) and British Amateur (1975) titles, and served on four victorious Walker Cup teams. His legacy is deeply embedded in Kinloch, making it a symbolic stage for this elite mid-amateur competition.

Leading the field is Evan Beck, fresh off a Master’s appearance plus a dominant 9-and-8 victory at the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur—held at Kinloch itself. The 34-year-old Virginia Beach native and Wake Forest alum has reemerged as a force in the amateur ranks, earning invitations to both the 2025 Masters and U.S. Open. Beck’s recent wins at the Coleman and George Thomas Invitationals, along with his top-5 mid-amateur ranking, position him as a favorite. His return to Kinloch, where he achieved his breakthrough, adds a compelling narrative to an event steeped in tradition and competitive excellence. In addition to Beck, we will see Nathan Smith, Andrew Price, Connor Doyal, and Christian Brand in the field. Should be a good one!

The Walter J. Travis Invitational

May 16-18, 2025

Garden City Golf Club

Defending Champion: Ben Greve

2024 Champion Ben Greve

There’s something timeless about the Travis Invitational—and not just because it's hosted at the historic Garden City Golf Club, where Walter J. Travis himself reimagined the original Devereux Emmet design. This tournament honors a true pioneer of American golf: a three-time U.S. Amateur champion and the first American to win the British Amateur. Each May, that legacy is brought to life through pure match play grit and a demanding 18-hole qualifier that sets the stage for flighted competition. With the event’s blend of history, architecture, and elite mid-am talent, expect another week of fireworks. Will Ben Greve defend his 2024 title?

The 2024 Walter J. Travis Invitational at Garden City Golf Club delivered the kind of gritty match-play drama that would’ve made its namesake proud. Ben Greve, the No. 2 seed and 2022 Minnesota Amateur champ, navigated a gauntlet of extra-hole thrillers to claim the Travis Cup title. After a 2&1 win in the opening round over Joseph Deraney, Greve survived back-to-back 19-hole battles against Cody Paladino and Will Davenport in the quarters and semis, respectively. In the final, he edged David Morgan 1-up, sealing the deal with a clutch birdie on the 18th. In the following two flights, Jonathan Keane won the Devereux Emmet Cup in 21 holes, while John Patterson toppled the top three seeds to capture the Charles MacDonald Cup in a wild run of upsets.

The John T. Lupton

May 23-25, 2025

The Honors Course

Defending Champion: Joe Deraney

Joe Deraney’s path to the winner’s circle at the 2024 John T. Lupton Memorial wasn’t just unlikely—it was nearly impossible. After a last-minute change of plans due to his U.S. Four-Ball partner still competing in NCAA Nationals, Deraney rerouted from Merion Golf Club to The Honors Course thanks to a timely call from tournament chairman Randy Yoder. Seizing the opportunity left by Garrett Rank’s NHL officiating duties, Deraney made the most of his sudden entry, firing a final-round 67 to erase a five-shot deficit and force a playoff with fellow Tupelo native Tucker Jenkins. After trading late birdies and dramatic moments, Deraney clinched his third Lupton title with a nerveless par on the first playoff hole, becoming the event’s first three-time Mid-Am champ. His steady hands in the bunker and on the greens delivered redemption for last year’s playoff heartbreak and solidified his place as one of the event’s all-time greats.

With the echoes of last year’s playoff still fresh and the memory of Deraney’s clutch performance etched into Lupton lore, all eyes return to The Honors Course in 2025 for what promises to be another high-stakes showdown. The Lupton Invitational has long been one of the crown jewels of the mid-am circuit, thanks to its elite field, championship pedigree, and a golf course that demands precision under pressure. Deraney will aim to defend his title and etch his name one step closer to Paul Simson’s all-time record, but a deep field—including past contenders like Jenkins, Wheeler, and Ford—stands ready to challenge. The event’s rich history and demanding setup ensure that nothing will come easy, but with form, familiarity, and momentum on his side, Deraney returns not just as the defending champ but as the man to beat.

The Huddleston Cup

May 29-31, 2025

Maridoe Golf Club

Defending Champion: Scott Harvey

The inaugural Huddleston Cup at the formidable Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, delivered exactly what was promised: elite mid-am and senior-am competition on a world-class stage. With 54 holes of stroke play and a star-studded field of 21 Mid-Ams and 21 Senior-Ams, the event brought serious firepower to a course known for hosting the LIV Golf Team Championship and challenging the best in the world. In the Mid-Am division, Scott Harvey set the tone early with an opening-round 67 and never looked back. The 2014 U.S. Mid-Am champ and veteran of countless national stages proved once again why he's one of the most consistent amateurs in the game. Despite a late push from 2022 Crump Cup winner Stephen Behr—who rebounded from a rough 77 with rounds of 66 and 68—Harvey’s birdie on 17 sealed a three-shot win and his place in Huddleston Cup history as its first Mid-Amateur champion.

As the Huddleston Cup heads into its sophomore year, expectations are sky-high for one of the newest must-watch events in amateur golf. Hosted once again at the exacting Maridoe Golf Club, known for its firm fairways, punishing greens, and professional pedigree, the course will test every part of a player’s game. With a format that pits top-tier Mid-Ams and Senior-Ams in the same spotlight, the event offers a unique blend of experience and firepower. Scott Harvey will return looking to defend his title. Add in the prestige of competing on a course that has seen major team events and pro-level pressure, and the 2025 Huddleston Cup is shaping up to be one of the season’s toughest—and most thrilling—tests.
