The Steam Room by MidamgolfHQ
June 2025
What we are steaming on this month:
Well it came down to the wire with the Huddleston cup wrapping up yesterday but here we are back in your inbox! If you thought May might ease us into the season, think again. The mid-ams delivered in a big way last month, with a full slate of elite invitationals, thrilling finishes, and standout performances across the country. From dramatic playoffs to dominant wins, May’s events showcased just how deep and competitive the mid-am game has become. And it wasn’t just individual glory on the line — mid-ams made their presence felt on the national team stage as well, with Evan Beck and Dan Walters impressive runner up finish at the USGA four-ball, proving once again that age and experience still go a long way in match play.
Now, as we turn the page to June, the calendar doesn’t let up. Some of the most prestigious events of the year are on deck, including the Anderson Memorial Four-Ball at Winged Foot — a crown jewel of the team format — and the George C. Thomas Invitational at Los Angeles Country Club, one of the finest tests of championship golf anywhere in the country.
Additionally in June, we will see the C.B Macdonald Invitational aka the National Singles at NGLA (yes that NGLA) and the Carlton Woods Invitational. June promises to deliver another month of high-stakes action, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on the players to watch, storylines to follow, and titles up for grabs. Read on for full recaps, previews, and everything you need to stay plugged into the mid-am scene.
2025 May Mid-Am Tournament Results
The Giles Invitational
May 2-4, 2025
Kinloch Golf Club
Champion: Andrew Bailey

Andrew Bailey, the reigning 2023 and 2024 Ohio Amateur champion, captured another prestigious title with a wire-to-wire victory at the first-ever Giles Invitational, held at the renowned Kinloch Golf Club. Bailey posted rounds of 72-68-67 to finish at 9-under par, securing a two-shot win in the debut of what is set to become a premier event on the mid-amateur calendar. Bailey's final-round 67 was the lowest score of the day and featured a blistering start, with birdies on four of the first six holes, including a stretch of three straight on Nos. 2, 3, and 4. That early charge vaulted him to the top of a tightly packed leaderboard and proved decisive down the stretch.
Blanton Farmer, Jeronimo Esteve, and William Minton shared runner-up honors at 7-under, while Andy Sajevic rounded out the top five with a solo fifth-place finish at 5-under. 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Evan Beck, who won his title on the same Kinloch layout, finished in a tie for 17th at 3-over par.
Created to spotlight the nation's top mid-amateur talent, the inaugural Giles Invitational brought together an elite field for a high-caliber test on one of Virginia’s most celebrated courses. Kinloch Golf Club, the host of the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur—provided the perfect stage for the new invitational’s debut.

The Walter J. Travis Invitational
May 16-18, 2025
Garden City Golf Club
Champion: Chris DeJohn

Chris DeJohn courtesy of the MGA
The Travis delivered another thrilling finish with Chris DeJohn capturing his second Travis victory with a 4 & 3 win over John Hunter at the historic Garden City Golf Club. A dominant force throughout match play, DeJohn carried his strong form into the final, building an early lead and never letting go. DeJohn has quickly established himself as a top mid-amateur. In recent years he has teamed up with Trevor Randolph to win the 2023 Anderson Memorial Four-Ball at Winged Foot and reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 Met Amateur. This early-season win adds to DeJohn’s growing résumé and signals more to come in 2025.
The event also features a number of flights outside of just the championship Travis flight. Each flight provided thrilling drama on one of the worlds great courses. Outside of the golf the event offers maybe the best setting in midam golf for camaraderie post round on the back porch.
The John T. Lupton
May 23-25, 2025
The Honors Course
Champion: Ben Reeves

Ben Reeves and caddy courtesy of Paul Payne
In a dramatic finish at The Honors Course, Ben Reeves overcame a six-shot final-round deficit to defeat Brett Patterson in a sudden-death playoff and win The Lupton. Reeves, the reigning Alabama Mid-Amateur champion and a Knoxville native, fired a closing 3-under 69 to finish at even-par 216. Patterson, Mississippi’s Mid-Amateur titleholder and a native Tennessean as well, sank a clutch 12-footer on the 18th to force extra holes, but a missed up-and-down in the playoff allowed Reeves to seal the win with a two-putt par.
It was a fitting battle between two Tennessee-born golfers now thriving just across state lines. Reeves, who played collegiately at UT-Martin, birdied 13 and 14, and made a pivotal par save on 16 en route to the clubhouse lead. Patterson and Ty Capps trailed by one heading to the 18th, but only Patterson birdied to join Reeves in the playoff. Capps, whose 73 left him third at 1-over 217, narrowly missed his own tying bid.
Friend of the page Nick Maccario and Lucas Armstrong rounded out the top five at 2-over and 4-over, respectively.

The Huddleston Cup
May 29-31, 2025
Maridoe Golf Club
Champion: Bobby Massa

Bobby Massa courtesy of the USGA
The Huddleston Cup delivered once again. Bobby Massa delivered a masterful performance at the 2025 Huddleston Cup, held at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas. With rounds of 70-67-68, Massa clinched the title with a commanding 9-shot win over Steele Dewald and the rest of the field. His consistent play across all three rounds showcased his skill in addition to his power. Massa is clearly the longest hitter in competitive mid amateur golf and might be in the running for the longest in the amateur game. He will likely make deep runs again this summer during USGA season.
Maridoe Golf Club, the host venue, is renowned for its challenging layout and serene setting. Designed by Steve Smyers, the course spans 7,800 yards from the back tees and is known for its strategic bunkering, undulating fairways, and fast greens. The 31-acre lake at the center of the property not only enhances the course's aesthetics but offered the competitors the unique opportunity to fish, as it is stocked with bass. This integration of golf and leisure activities exemplifies what makes the event so much fun. The staff and service at Maridoe is second to none with the players raving about it all week.

Carlton Woods Invitational
June 3-5
Carlton Woods Golf Club
Defending Champion - Shane Heise

Shane Heise courtesy of Carlton Woods Invitational
The Carlton Woods Invitational returns this year as one of the crown jewels on the mid-amateur calendar — an event known for its exceptional field, first-class hospitality, and a championship venue that demands everything from a player’s game.
Now in its 18th year, the Invitational has earned a reputation as one of the best-run and most respected mid-amateur events in the country. Hosted at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, the tournament draws a national field of elite mid-ams and seniors each year for three rounds of stroke play competition.
This year’s edition carries an extra layer of intrigue as local member Shane Heise returns as the defending champion. Heise, a longtime competitor in the event and a familiar face in the Texas amateur scene, broke through with a memorable victory in 2024, holding off a strong field with steady play and clutch putting down the stretch. As a member of Carlton Woods, he’ll look to defend his title on familiar turf, but he’ll face stiff competition from a mix of seasoned veterans and rising mid-am talent.

Anderson Memorial Four-Ball
June 5-8
Winged Foot Golf Club
Defending Champions: Jimmy Chestnut and Scott Strickland

Each spring, some of the best mid-amateur duos in the world descend upon one of America’s most iconic clubs for what has become the crown jewel of four-ball competition — The Anderson Memorial at Winged Foot
Set against the historic backdrop of Winged Foot’s storied fairways, the Anderson has firmly cemented its status as the premier four-ball invitational in the country. Since 1933, this event has honored the legacy of John G. Anderson, one of the club’s founding members and a standout amateur in his own right. Nearly a century later, the Anderson remains a fixture on the national mid-am calendar — not just for its competitive prestige, but for the camaraderie, tradition, and club excellence it represents.
The 2024 edition delivered everything you'd expect from the Anderson: firm greens, pressure-packed matches, and a final that didn’t disappoint. Jim Chestnut and Scott Strickland emerged victorious in dominant fashion, cruising to a commanding 5 & 4 win over 2023 champions Chris DeJohn and Trevor Randolph, two of the most respected names in the mid-am game. It was a fitting end to a week of top-tier golf on the West Course, a layout that has tested the world’s best in majors — and continues to do the same in amateur circles.

C.B Macdonald Invitational Tournament
June 13-15
National Golf Links of America
Defending Champion: Jimmy Chestnut

Jimmy Chestnut courtesy of amateurgolf.com
Few venues in amateur golf carry the mystique of National Golf Links of America, and few mid-amateur events match the prestige of the C.B. Macdonald Invitational — a celebration of classic architecture and elite amateur competition, played on one of the game's most historic stages.
In 2024, Jimmy Chestnut authored a commanding run through the match play bracket to claim the Mid-Am title. A former standout at the University of Michigan, Chestnut opened with a steady 1-over 73 in stroke-play qualifying, comfortably earning a spot in the top 16. Once match play began, he hit another gear. Chestnut defeated Park Ulrich 2&1 in the Round of 16, followed by another 2&1 win over Johnny DelPrete in the quarters. In the semifinals, he handled Christian Cavaliere 3&2 before delivering a dominant 5&4 win over Nate Smith in the final. Smith, notably, had reached the final 16 at the 2023 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Sleepy Hollow, highlighting the strength of Chestnut’s victory.
As we look ahead to the 2025 C.B. Macdonald Invitational, anticipation is high. The event continues to attract a who’s who of mid-amateur talent from across the country. With the backdrop of NGLA — with its iconic templates, windswept fairways, and views of Peconic Bay — this tournament offers one of the most visually stunning and strategically rich tests in the game.

The George C. Thomas
June 26-28
The Los Angeles Country Club
Defending Champion: Evan Beck

Evan Beck Courtesy of LACC
As the George C. Thomas Invitational returns to The Los Angeles Country Club this year, all eyes will be on Evan Beck, who delivered one of the most memorable finishes in the tournament’s storied history in 2024.
A past champion from 2022, Beck reaffirmed his affinity for LACC with a gritty, clutch performance that earned him his second Thomas title. After finishing tied at 1-under with former Yale standout Will Davenport, Beck forced a playoff by confidently walking in a nine-foot par putt on the 18th green — a moment that capped a steady final round under tournament pressure.
The championship came down to a three-hole aggregate playoff on holes 1, 2, and 9. The pair matched pars on the first two, with Beck keeping pace thanks to a miracle chip-in that drew gasps from the gallery. On the decisive par-3 9th, Beck stuck his tee shot close and rolled in the birdie to clinch the title — a dramatic end fitting for one of mid-amateur golf’s most prestigious events.
2025 looks to deliver another thrilling year and will we see the likes of Davenport or one of the many capable competitors dethrone Beck!
