What we are steaming on this month:

2024 is officially underway for major mid-am golf. Things kicked off down Tampa way with the Gasparilla Invitational. I mean frankly, you have to be living under a rock to not know this event was happening. It felt like everyone on golf social media who has any interest in mid-am golf had some coverage of the event. More to follow in the recap below.

In this issue, we have updated East-West Cup standings on tap. We also have a preview of the next major mid-am event at this small club that no one has likely heard of called Seminole.

We wrap things up this month with a more thoughtful edition of the Ice Bath. As always we hope you enjoy!

Recap: Boy oh boy where do we start with this recap? The Gasparilla Invitational once again delivered a nail-biting finish. Our champion, emerging triumphant after a thrilling 2-hole playoff, is Charles Fitzsimmons, proudly representing Canada. Charles, a former Canadian mid-am champion, showcased his game and solidified his place as a rising star in the mid-am game.

In a thrilling finish, Charles outlasted Park Ulrich and Mile McConnell in the playoff. The picturesque par 5 18th hole at Palma Ceia served as the dramatic stage for deciding the victor. We happen to love a reachable par 5 to decide a victory of this magnitude. Perfect drama!

The week kicked off with a Monday qualifier giving players not invited directly into the event a chance to earn a spot! From there the traditional Gasparilla festivities got started, setting the tone for an unforgettable tournament. The clubhouse and patio buzzed with anticipation after each round, and the halfway house ensured that players were tuned up for the challenges ahead. Ben Adelberg from Backoftherange had plenty of content throughout the week including this gem with Tug Maude (nice shades Tug!):

The theme of the week was how everyone from players to media personalities raved about the event. The members are bought into hosting one of the best events in golf (yes all of golf) and it shows. Congrats to everyone at Palma Ceia!

The George C. Coleman Invitational Golf Tournament at Seminole is a legendary event steeped in rich history and tradition. Against the backdrop of Seminole's timeless beauty and challenging layout, players are transported to a bygone era of golf, where respect for the course and one's fellow competitors reign supreme.

One tradition in particular stands out above the rest at the Coleman: Play Fast! No 4.5 hour rounds are tolerated at this event. Now if we could get everyone else in tournament golf on board with this idea!

As the Coleman continues to evolve and write new chapters in its illustrious history, one thing remains certain: its legacy as a beacon of excellence in amateur golf will endure for generations to come.

This month we dive into what we think makes mid-am golf so special!

Mid-am golf holds a unique place in our hearts. This is due to the blend of competitiveness, camaraderie, and dedication to the sport. Mid-ams share a deep appreciation for the game's traditions and etiquette, fostering an environment where sportsmanship and integrity are paramount. Whether competing in local championships or prestigious national events, mid-ams forge lasting friendships and connections.

Unlike professional golfers or elite amateurs who often dedicate their entire lives to training and competing, mid-ams must balance their love for the game with careers, families, and other responsibilities. This balancing act adds an extra layer of complexity and depth to competitions, as players must juggle their time and energy effectively to stay competitive while managing the demands of everyday life. Let’s be honest it’s always why the bar room is packed and the range empty after many tournament days.

Mid-am events offer a community where your game will be tested, stories will be shared, and lifelong memories will be created. In essence, mid-am golf showcases the true nature of the game—a timeless pursuit of excellence, camaraderie, and personal growth.
