June 2024

What we are steaming on this month:

Mid-am golf is in full swing, and May did not disappoint. Welcome back to another edition of the newsletter, where we will recap last month’s action across the world of mid-am golf.

We witnessed a mid-am team win the USGA 4-Ball! Congrats to Brian Blanchard and Sam Engel! We also had exciting finishes at both the Travis and the Lupton tournaments.

Looking ahead, June promises to be another busy month as everyone rounds their games into form and prepares for an exciting summer.

We hope you enjoy this edition. Cheers!

2024 May Major Mid-Am Tournament Results

John T. Lupton Memorial

May 24-26, 2024

The Honors Course

Champion: Joe Deraney

Recap: It was another exciting Lupton, with Joe Deraney claiming his third title at the Honors Club. Joe captured this year’s title in extra holes, holing a 6-footer to take the win over Tucker Jenkins.

Originally scheduled to play in the USGA 4-ball, Joe's partner had to withdraw from the event because of the NCAA National Championship. A last-minute call from the Lupton tournament committee had Joe on his way to Tennessee. Never a dull moment in the life of a mid-am golfer. Joe has likely secured his place for the East-West Cup Matches this fall and is trending well as we head into a busy summer of USGA events and top amateur championships.

Walter J. Travis Invitational

May 17-19, 2024

Garden City Golf Club

Champion: Ben Greve

2024 Walter J. Travis Invitational champion Ben Greve

Recap: The Walter J. Travis is truly one of the most special golf events of the year. Once again, it lived up to its stature and delivered another incredible competition. Ultimately, former college teammates Ben Greve and David Morgan squared off in the final, with Ben taking home the title by a slim 1-up margin. It was a back-and-forth battle featuring incredible shots on the esteemed Devereux Emmet layout.

The event starts with an 18-hole qualifier on Friday, with the top 56 players getting flighted into match-play brackets. The 16-man championship flight was decided by a compelling 11-for-6 playoff late Friday, leaving some players on the outside looking in.

Other flight winners included Jonathan Keane, who won the other 16-man Devereux Emmet flight in 21 holes over Jesse Bull. John Patterson captured the MacDonald flight, defeating last year’s Travis champion Chris DeJohn 1-up. Alan Coshatt won the Jones flight, besting Stephen Walsh 3&2. Finally, Andrew Lane captured the Taft flight with a 2&1 victory over Kevin Miller.

USGA 4-Ball

Champions: Brian Blanchard and Sam Engel

Your 2024 USGA 4-Ball champions are Brian Blanchard and Sam Engel. The Arizona-based mid-ams took down the formidable mid-am team of Will Davenport and Mike Smith in the semi-finals to create a showdown with the young team of Brown & Herrington.

The mid-ams controlled the final match from the start and never looked back. The final birdie on 18 sealed the deal for a 2-up victory. Truly a testament to how well Blanchard and Engel played all week. It's awesome to see two working mid-ams take down the high schoolers and win one for the old guys!
