The Steam Room by MidamgolfHQ
July 2024
What we are steaming on this month:
The mid-am season continued with a BUSY June. We had action nationwide with several compelling events and strong finishes.
We saw age and wisdom prevail on several of the most challenging tracks including Winged Foot, Maridoe, Carlton Woods, and LACC.
Looking ahead, July tends to be a slower month on the mid-am major side. However many state mid-am competitions will take place as well as the start of USGA qualifier season.
We continue to add to our “major” mid-am event list down below in the newsletter. This month we added in the mid-am team championship which will take place in August.
Finally we have updated East-West standings. Coming off the Huddleston Cup at Maridoe its obvious the event is going to be special and we will be sure to keep track of the rankings as we head into November.
As always we hope you enjoy this edition. Cheers!

Maridoe Golf Club once again demonstrated its reputation as one of the most challenging venues in American golf. Scott Harvey successfully defended his Huddleston Cup title, delivering one of the best rounds of the year with a final score of 68 in windy and tough conditions. He won by four shots over Dalton Melnyk.
The Huddleston Cup, named after Maridoe's founder Albert Huddleston, featured Albert himself greeting and welcoming the players. His passion for high-level amateur golf and unwavering support made the event particularly special. The field was limited to just 22 of the best mid-ams from around the country and made for a great post-round hang.

The tournament, dating back to 1933, honors one of the club's founding members, John G. Anderson.

Shane Heise, a member of Carlton Woods, emerged victorious, shooting an impressive -3 (213) over three rounds. He edged out Kris Marshall and Domenic Maricocchi by one shot. The tournament was tied with three holes remaining, but a birdie on the 16th hole gave Heise the lead. Two pars to finish secured his title and lifted the trophy.
The Carlton Woods Invitational made its return after a year's hiatus. The club closed the renowned Nicklaus course for a comprehensive restoration shortly after the 2022 event. The result of this restoration has lengthened the course, adding a new level of challenge for the players.
The course's enhancements and the club's exceptional hospitality made for another memorable event.

Champion: Evan Beck

Evan Beck collected another victory at LACC in a thrilling playoff over Will Davenport. After a couple of early bogeys in his round, Davenport turned the tides going -4 in the final 11 holes to post a 209 total. Requiring a par on the last hole to tie Davenport, Beck calming knocked in a nine footer to send this one to a three hole playoff taking place on Holes 1-2-9.
After matching pars on the first, Beck was in trouble on the difficult par 4 second. Standing some 20 yards in the heather lying 3 strokes, Beck struck lightning by holing his next shot for a miraculous par. After the heroic save, Beck was still even with Davenport going to the par 3 ninth, where he hit his tee shot to a few feet, securing birdie and the prestigious title.

The Ice Bath
This month, we decided to indulge in a bit of dreaming. One of the most captivating aspects of top mid-amateur events is the prestigious courses that host them. We thought it would be fun to imagine which course could host the next major mid-am event.
There are new contenders like Tree Farm, Old Barnwell, and the Cabot properties. On the other hand, you have historic venues such as Essex County Club or Chicago Golf Club (we're dreaming, after all).
We believe that hosting something in the Midwest would be incredible. The Midwest truly has some of the best clubs and courses in the world. Maybe we can petition our friend brethren to open up the doors and kick off a new event. Shoreacres anyone…..?
Cheers!
We love to feature our passionate mid-am golf community. If you have a story, achievement, or event you'd like to share, send us a DM on our Instagram or X (formerly Twitter) @midamgolfHQ
Until next month…..
