The Steam Room by MidamgolfHQ
August 2024
What we are steaming on this month:
July was a bit slower on the mid-amateur major front. However, some mid-am’s had impressive showings in various state amateurs, which we'll highlight later in the newsletter.
Looking ahead, August promises to be exciting with several high-quality mid-amateur events, including the U.S. Amateur. We've seen several mid-ams qualify for the U.S. Am, and it would be fantastic to see one of them make a deep run.
Speaking of the USGA we are now into the U.S Mid-Am qualifying portion of the summer. Congrats to those players who have qualified off WAGR points or already made it through a qualifier.
MidamgolfHQ will be roaming the fairways of Camargo GC in Cincinnati later this month, hoping to qualify for the U.S. Mid-Am. If you're around, please come and say hello.
As a side note, we want to give a special shoutout to Brad Nurski for winning the Missouri State Amateur. The event technically concluded in June; we missed it here at MidamgolfHQ. Asleep at the wheel again……..Congrats to Brad!
As always, we hope you enjoy this edition. Cheers!

The Ohio Amateur Championship
July 8-12, 2024
Sylvania Country Club
Champion: Andrew Bailey

Courtesy of Ohio Golf Association
Andrew Bailey made history defending his Ohio Amateur Championship title with a one-shot victory over Tyler Goecke.
Held at Sylvania Country Club, Goecke started strong with scores of 66-69-65 (-16), securing a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. The final pairing featured Goecke (-16), Bailey (-13), and Caden Scarbrough (-11). Goecke, the highest-ranked amateur, and NCAA National Championship runner-up, faced Bailey, a seasoned mid-amateur and defending champion, and Scarbrough, a talented underdog from the D2 college ranks.
After a strong tee shot on the par-4 18th, Bailey left his wedge 12 feet from the cup for a tricky birdie putt. Goecke's approach fell short, leaving a difficult chip to 4 feet. Bailey narrowly missed his birdie, making par and leaving Goecke with a 4-foot putt to force a playoff. Goecke's putt missed left, securing Bailey's victory and one for the old guys! Cheers to Andrew.

Jonathan Faber defeated Max Silverman 5&4 in the 36-hole final to capture the 101st Long Island Amateur.
Both players held the lead during the first 18 holes, with Farber taking a 1-up lead into lunch. After tying the first two holes in the afternoon session, Silverman won the third to square the match. Farber responded by winning the fourth hole, then two of the next five, to take a 3-up lead into the final nine holes.
Farber won the tenth and eleventh holes to go 5-up with six to play. On the 32nd hole, his long birdie putt fell short, but he made the par putt to tie the hole and win the championship.
This was Farber’s second time in the Long Island Amateur finals, the first being in 2018, where he lost to Colby Anderson.

So what the heck is a pro event doing in this newsletter? Well, a mid-am won the darn thing. Andrew Von Lossow edged out Bryce Fisher for a one-shot victory.
On Sunday, Von Lossow lost his lead with a double bogey on No. 17 but responded with a birdie on the par-5 18th to win the Rosauers Open as both low amateur and tournament champion.
The victory was popular among the back-nine spectators, who cheered as Von Lossow made three key birdies. He became just the third amateur champion, joining Derek Bayley and Cody Upham. Von Lossow’s birdie on No. 18 capped a 4-under 67, bringing his 54-hole total to 13-under 200.

2024 marks the 30th playing of The Picard Cup. A mid-am and senior am competition that recognizes the legendary golf professional who split time between Canterbury and Seminole.
The walking-only partner event is played over 54 holes in two days. The format features best ball - alternate shot - best ball.
The membership loves the event and the annual “Pic-Am” the day before the competition serves as a practice round for the competitors. It also serves as an opportunity for the members to pair up with competitors in some friendly competition and bragging rights at the bar. Ohio golf in the summer is spectacular and we wish all the players an enjoyable time.

Hermitage Country Club
Defending Champion: Sam Beach

This year will mark the 82nd playing of the Valentine Invitational. The event is a 54-hole stroke play competition across both courses at Hermitage.
Historically the event has been predominately mid-am’s and will be shifting its open division in 2025 to a fully mid-am event. With WAGR points on the line and the club and committee investing heavily into the event, this will become a staple for top mid-am’s every year.
The proximity of the club to Richmond will make it a perfect preview for the U.S Mid-Am at Kinloch in September.

The Mid-Am Team Championship

The Mid-Am Team Championship is the culmination of many years of work. The event started as the Midwest Cup and has grown from 9 states to a full nationwide competition.
The format is 4 man teams representing each state with WAGR points on the line. The event while serious on the competition side should be one of the best hangs of the year…….I mean Vegas right?!
